Name - Paige
Nicknames – Paigey Poo, Pumpkin and/or Pumpkin Pie
Age – 9 mo
Weight – 40 lbs
Medical – Distemper Survivor – Special Needs
Background – Paige was dumped at a few days old with her Mom and other littermates at a Vet’s office in Bakersfield. Its the Pits rescued the family from the Shelter they were brought to shortly thereafter, but unfortunately prior to their arrival with us, the puppies were infected with the distemper virus. Paige has fought valiantly from three weeks of age and survived, she has cleared the distemper virus, but struggles with waxing and waning mobility in her back legs and incontinence as residual effects. She cannot always walk, but does have periods where she can stand, walk and run to a degree. Her final mobility state is still to be determined, we are not sure where she will stabilize. Unfortunately, there is a possibility that she will not stabilize and will continue to decline to a hospice state, but we are crossing our paws. Along with the lower extremity mobility issues comes some incontinence – she does not leak constantly, but when she has to go, she goes wherever she is. Washable diapers work well and she does not mess with them. She also has some tremors (twitches/involuntary movements, including opening and closing her jaw). She will be special needs and may need a wheelchair depending on her final mobility state. Some physical therapy exercises and pool therapy are currently being assessed to see what may be best for her, and could be an ongoing requirement for her wellbeing. She is not yet spayed (but to be scheduled soon) due to her other medical issues. Because she is special needs, we are willing to help with some veterinary care for anyone interested in adopting her.
What Foster Mom/Dad wants you to know – Paige is an incredibly sweet little girl. This little trooper loves to cuddle and “chew” bones stuffed with goodies. No matter what has been thrown at her she soldiers on, and has the cutest little front leg dance that she does when she is excited. She is quiet and loving and as a bonus she’s super pretty and soft as can be! She could be an only dog with someone who is home all the time to dedicate attention to her, or she would like a mellow, respectful sibling to hang out with, as she does not do well alone. She just wants to be with her family and is happy to lay at your side while you work on the computer, or cuddle on the sofa for some evening tv. She will play with some of the easier treat puzzles, and will need her new family to provide some mental exercise through toys, easy challenges, and walks in a wagon or other forms of outings, since she cannot currently exercise physically.
Paige will probably never be a “normal” dog, but if you are in a situation where you are able to and desire to give time and attention to a special needs dog, who has challenges due to no fault of her own, Paige deserves that kind of loving, giving home.
Crate trained – She currently sleeps in a crate but is not crate potty trained due to her medical
Leash trained - No
